The Next Generation

It comes as no surprise to hear that we are called to prepare and equip the next generation for service to the Lord. Many scriptures point this out, but I like the way John writes about it in 1 John 2:12-14. It's a circular demonstration because John writes about children, young men, and fathers and then he writes about them, again. John describes a cycle that is intended to perpetuate from one generation to the next.

In this passage we see that a father who follows Christ has the responsibility to teach his child to do the same. That child grows into a strong young man who in turn becomes a father in whom the Word of God lives. As a father, he will pass that knowledge on to his children, who will become young men, who will become fathers, who pass it along to their children, who become young men, who become fathers, and so it goes throughout the generations.

We must not let our knowledge of the Lord pass away with us. We must see to it that the next generation knows that they are forgiven on account of His name. They must know about His amazing love. They must know that He desires a personal relationship with them. They must know that He will give them the power to overcome the evil one. Here's the deal, though. The passage of scripture above says that we must know all of that ourselves before we can pass it on to the next generation. Search your heart and know that you are forgiven. You are loved. He desires that your relationship with Him be even stronger. The Holy Spirit in you gives you have the power to overcome the evil one. Know it. Live it. Pass it on to the next generation.
