Shameless

Since I became a follower of Christ I have known that Jesus died for my sins to set me free from the power sin had over my life. But, I noticed something as I re-read Hebrews 9:14. This passage of scripture says that the blood of Christ will cleanse my conscience so I can serve God. He died for my sins, but He also died for my conscience. I know I've read this before and I'm sure I must have heard a sermon about it somewhere along the way, but I missed something. Why would Jesus give His life for my conscience?

I thought about what it means to have a guilty conscience. It usually comes from doing something that I know I shouldn't have done. I find it very difficult to look someone in the eye if I have a guilty conscience. If I find it hard to stand before someone with a guilty conscience, how much more difficult is it to stand before God with a guilty conscience? The devil would have me dwell on the sins and mistakes of my past so that I feel guilty. He knows that if I have a guilty conscience I won't approach God because I feel too ashamed. But, Jesus died to clear my conscience so I can approach God boldly and unashamed of the things I've done.

If I want to serve God the way He would have me serve Him, I need to be able to stand before Him. By knowing that Christ died to clear my conscience I can enter into the presence of God with an assurance that I am loved, I am forgiven, I am unashamed, and I am set apart for His purpose and His glory. Don't let guilt keep you from His presence. Hebrews 8 finishes by reminding us that God remembers our sins no more. In that knowledge we can move forward with a clear conscience. In that knowledge we can serve the Lord.
